Woman taped to plane seat gets record fine

A passenger received the largest fine in FAA (United States Federal Aviation Administration) history after assaulting crew and attempting to open a plane’s door in midflight. To make matters worse, it had to be taped to a seat. The case happened in July 2021.

The FAA fined the woman $81,850, about BRL386,000 at current exchange rates, after she was the protagonist in the confusion. The journey of the American Airlines flight that left Dallas, Texas and went to Charlotte, North Carolina takes about 2 hours to be done by plane.

On the choppy flight, the woman fell down the aisle of the plane and threatened a crew member who offered to help. She then tried to open the cabin door and was prevented from doing so.

The amount to be paid overcame the fine of US$77,272, about R$365,000, in a case that also took place in July last year. At that time, a man tried to open the plane door several times and bit another passenger in the process.

Pete Buttigieg, US Secretary of Transportation, urged: “When you’re on an airplane, don’t be an idiot and don’t put the crew and other passengers at risk.”

Man beaten after trying to open plane door

Recently, a jiujitsu fighter along with crew members prevented an uncontrolled passenger from opening the door of the plane. The flight traveled between Doha, Qatar and Casablanca, Morocco.
