Another US state that restricts abortion rights. In Florida, women no longer have the right to an abortion after the 15th week of pregnancy under the law promulgated Thursday, April 14 by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. Passed by a Republican majority in the Florida state legislature, the text goes into effect on July 1. Originally, the legal threshold for an abortion was 24 weeks gestation.
The only exceptions considered by this new law are those of “serious danger” to the woman’s health or a fatal anomaly of the fetus, but not in the case of rape or incest.
“We’re here today to stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves,” Ron DeSantis said as he signed the text at an anti-abortion activist rally. “This represents the largest life safety measure enacted in this state in a generation,” he added.
“This abortion ban is an attack on our most fundamental freedoms: the right to dispose of our bodies, our own future,” denounces Stephanie Fraim in a press release. The latter runs the Planned Parenthood organization for Southwest and Central Florida, which manages many abortion clinics in the United States.
