“Peace is possible” in Ukraine if Ukrainians “decide it,” declared Emmanuel Macron on Sunday, October 23, at the opening of a peace summit organized in Rome. “Today, let’s not allow peace to be somehow conquered by Russian power (…) Peace is possible, the only one they (Ukrainians) will decide if they choose,” he said.
Power cuts imposed in Kyiv
Ukraine’s national operator Ukrenergo carried out power cuts in Kyiv, Ukraine, on Sunday in a bid to “stabilize” power supplies following repeated Russian strikes against the country’s infrastructure. “On October 23, stabilization cuts took place in Kyiv to avoid accidents,” said the Ukrainian private electric utility DTEK. This stipulates that these cuts, which alternately affect the different districts of the capital, should not last longer than four hours.
The population called for limiting their energy consumption
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged his people to use energy “even more conscientiously than before” as Russian forces continue to attack the country’s energy infrastructure. “The stability of our public energy economy depends on it, in any city or region of Ukraine.” For the leader, “the main target of Russian terrorists is energy.”
More than a million households without electricity
According to an adviser to the Ukrainian Presidency, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, more than a million Ukrainian homes are without power after Russian strikes pounded the country’s energy infrastructure. He clarified: “672,000 subscribers were registered in Khmelnytskyi region, 188,400 in Mikolayiv region, 102,000 in Volyn region, 242,000 in Cherkassy region, 174,790 in Rivne region, 61,913 in Kirovograd region and 10,500 in Odessa region Cut. ”
