To update: By late Sunday morning (October 23), Cardi B and Madonna had made amends. Cardi continued to write Twitter that she had a “nice” conversation with Madonna. The pop queen tweeted, “I love you @iamcardib!! I always have and always will.” Cardi also deleted her reactionary tweets.
Cardi B feels disrespected after being featured in Madonna’s reflections on the 30th anniversary of her sex coffee table book.
The superstar-rapper took to social media on Sunday morning (October 23) to fire back at the Queen of Pop, after publishing an Instagram post the night before about how the legendary singer’s then-scandalous book – published in conjunction with her 1992 album Erotica – helped pave the way for other female artists to express their sexuality.
“30 years ago I published a book called SEX. In addition to photos of me naked, there were photos of men kissing men, women kissing women, and me kissing everyone,” Madonna wrote Saturday, noting that she’s faced a lot of criticism at the time. “Now Cardi B can sing over her WAP. Kim Kardashian can have her bare butt on the cover of any magazine and Miley Cyrus can come in like a wrecking ball.”
She finished with “You’re welcome b—es” followed by a clown emoji.
In a series of since-deleted tweets Sunday morning, Cardi wrote that she felt disrespected by the Post, particularly by Madonna’s use of the clown emoji.
“I’ve literally paid homage to this woman so many times because I grew up with her … she can get her point across without putting on clown emojis and smooth-mouthed,” the rapper said wrote alongside a screenshot of a 2018 Billboard article praising Madonna. “These icons really become disappointments once you make it in the industry, so I’m keeping it to myself.”
Some Twitter users wrote that Cardi didn’t get Madonna’s point, noting that Madge said she “paved the way for sexual songs to go mainstream” and that the singer wasn’t trying to insult the rapper.
“I know exactly what she said and I understand,” Cardi said answered, “but it’s about THE TONE…Calling me b—it and putting clown emojis on it? The f—!”
In a similar reaction the rapper wrote“SAY EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY, BUT DON’T INSULT ME THE F— …nobody’s gonna be a little girl with me (especially a white woman).”
Later Sunday morning, Hollywood Unlocked founder Jason Lee tweeted Being “on the phone with Madonna and Cardi” and listening to the stars “share their perspective on communication has expanded their love for each other.”
Shortly after, Cardi and Madonna shared on Twitter that they’d fixed things. “I spoke to Madonna… It was beautiful… Have a great day and drive safe yallll,” the rapper said wrote. Madonna added, “I love you @iamcardib!! I always have and always will.”
In 2018, Cardi gushed after meeting her “idol” Madonna at an Oscars after-party, where she posed for photos alongside the singer and Kardashian.
“I met my real IDOL Madonna. I can’t even believe I performed at her event and it was the most meaningful performance ever,” Cardi wrote on Instagram at the time. “I grew up with my mother listening to Madonna for hours. I played ‘Material Girl’ as a freshman in high school, listened to her on all my photo shoots for super confidence, and always mentioned her in my interviews. The best part is that she was everything I thought she was, a liberal feminist bitch. I’m so happy.”
