A fatal incident took place at the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer arena: the 20-year-old bullfighter died from his injuries in hospital.
A 20-year-old bullfighter was fatally wounded by a bull during a competition near Montpellier in southern France. The accident took place at the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer arena during a competition to remove trophies from the forehead and horns of a bull, the national federation of so-called Camargue races said Thursday.
The fighter, who still had trainee status, was seriously injured in a clinic in Marseille, where he died. Other competitions were initially canceled and psychological help was arranged for eyewitnesses to the accident that happened on Wednesday. The city’s mayor expressed his condolences to the family “after the terrible accident”.
Risky sport with Carmargue bulls is part of France’s intangible cultural heritage. Unlike Spanish bullfighting, which is also organized in the south of France, the animals are not killed afterwards, but returned to pasture.
