Security forces have killed at least eight people in protests in Iran in the last 24 hours, according to Amnesty International. Security forces “opened fire again on the mourners and protesters”, the human rights organization said yesterday. Amnesty condemned the “reckless and illegal use of firearms”.
Thousands of people gathered on Wednesday night at the end of the period of mourning for the late Kurd Mahsa Amini.
According to the human rights organization Hengaw, security forces shot people and used tear gas in Amini’s hometown of Saghes. According to reports by the Iranian news agency ISNA, “nearly 10,000 people” have moved to Amini’s grave in Saghes Cemetery.
Amini died in Tehran in September after being arrested by religious police on charges of failing to wear a headscarf in accordance with regulations. Activists accuse authorities of abusing Amini. Her death set off a wave of protests that continues to this day.
