South Korea, at least 50 people in cardiac arrest during Halloween celebrations

The pictures make an impression. Dozens of people are lying on the ground on a street in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, many undergoing cardiac resuscitation. According to the authorities, “a few dozen” people are in cardiac arrest, and dozens more injured were transported to nearby hospitals. The number of deaths is still unknown and awaiting confirmation from hospitals.

It happened in the Itaewon district, one of the most popular among young people in the city, where the Halloween celebrations were held.

According to the first reconstructions, the crowd would have started to push through a narrow street not far from the Hamilton Hotel. Authorities estimate around 100,000 people were in the area to celebrate the first unrestricted event since the pandemic began.

Choi Cheon-sik, a local fire department officer, spoke to the press and reported that at least 50 people suffered cardiac arrest and more than a hundred were injured. At least 81 cases of citizens with “difficulty breathing”.

Some media reports that the presence of a celebrity at a nearby bar was meant to unleash chaos, where young people began rushing and overpowering each other.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has declared a state of emergency and activated the usual procedures in the event of a disaster. According to the fire brigade, at least 400 doctors rush to the scene of the accident, and the number of ambulances used is around 140.
