Giordana Angi and This Fragile Beauty

Giordana Angi is facing a new horizon in her career. The singer-songwriter has accustomed us to constant changes of direction and once again she has shifted the coordinates of her music. Anticipating the single “An autumn ago”, “This fragile beauty” also includes the previous singles “Passeggero” and “Le cose che non dico”, which had already shown a different way of the singer-songwriter putting her emotions into music, who are at the center of his poetics.

With such a strong theme uniting them, how did these songs come about?

The title of the album honestly just came to an end. I started from a large body of work, about thirty pieces, from which I skimmed the twelve that would make up the final version. The selection was made based on those who, in my opinion, told different stories and could have different moods, also in order not to bore me and the listener. Since the texts are always born from a need of the moment, at the end of the work I was looking for a title that could unite them. And what seemed common to me was beauty, not that of winners and number ones, but of consciousness. The one that arises from fatigue, loneliness and uncommunicability.

How frail do you feel and how do you relate to your frailty?

When I was little I was very fragile and didn’t realize it. I went through my weaknesses and this allowed me to acquire important life tools. Today I have a different serenity and clarity, even when writing. Today, when I experience a moment of fragility, I experience it because there is no other way, but I recognize it and therefore try to transform it more quickly.

When you describe these songs, you have assigned different colors to them, with yellow and blue predominating in different shades. What is their meaning?

Colors actually come from a practical thing. At home I have the piano and the studio where I do the productions. When I started writing songs, I wrote them on sticky notes of different colors. I put the smaller ones on the computer, which eventually got full. And I realized that I had never picked a post-it at random, but that the color was linked to the mood that inspired me through this song. As I was about to write two lines to present the pieces, it was natural to associate the pieces with the songs.

In this album, many tracks have a lighter or more energetic vibe, even with serious lyrics. Have you found a new way to bring your emotions together?

I did it for two main reasons. In the meantime, in order not to get bored and then put the most functional outfit on each song. For example, the first track on the album, “Notte per go via”, was born as a ballad and then I revolutionized it by doubling the BPM and turning it into a heavy hitting song. In the end I like the result. I played the record a week ago and thought it was a good job.

You talk about it as if it’s something you’re already past…

I delivered the record in early September and it is the result of my connections with very few collaborations. I’ve been following every aspect of this album and started working on it last year. I came to the end result very gradually. So it’s clear to me that it’s kind of been played down, although it’s given a new lease of life now that I can share it with the public.

10 years have passed since your first participation in Sanremo. A budget?

I started when I was very little. I consider myself very lucky. I have always devoted a lot of time to music, it is my most precious asset that accompanies me at every moment. It’s been ten years, but it all feels very natural to me. And I’m proud of how it all went. I slowly conquered them and they are all things that belong to me.

You often speak of a new phase. Do you feel the need to recalibrate yourself cyclically or are you still looking for something that completely satisfies you?

Actually, I always do it spontaneously. I was very enthusiastic about this record from the very first moment. Time passes, you change and regenerate. And the music accompanies me in this process. The changes in direction are not rehearsed, but natural.

In the cover photo, you’re dragging a keyboard along a beach… What does that mean?

This recording came out of my idea. I called the photographer I’ve been working with for a while and told her clearly what was on my mind. It seemed to me the most natural thing in the world: nature, an open space and the piano. The amazing thing is that this keyboard still works with all the sand it’s loaded.

Born singer, well-known author of our song for big names and now also record on the label 21Co as part of “Amici”. How are you living this new role?

I’ve been working on “Amici” for years as a youth worker, with unreleased songs and covers. This experience confirmed my willingness to share my creativity. I was never possessive with my songs. I could not be an author for others. I really like the idea of contaminating myself with other people. Being useful to someone else gives me incredible satisfaction. And when the chance to create this label presented itself, I felt honored to join the project and test myself.

Do you have a dream in the drawer?

During the two years of the pandemic, alongside writing, I began studying by attending the Faculty of Arts. I passed the first year of the exam, but then I had to stop because I couldn’t do everything. But I will continue and in my dreams there is an idea that maybe in twenty years I will be able to teach in schools.
