Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts DELAYS sending Trump’s tax returns to Congress: victory for the ex-president who argued Democrats only wanted files for political reasons

  • Roberts has temporarily blocked Congress from getting its hands on Trump’s return
  • Trump’s legal team filed an urgent motion Monday to stop the handover
  • They claim the Democrats want the files for purely political reasons
  • Without the intervention of the court, the recordings could have been transferred this week
  • It’s the latest twist in a long legal battle between Trump and Congress
  • If the Republicans retake the House of Representatives, they will likely stop trying to get the records

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts has delayed the transfer of Donald Trump’s tax returns from the IRS to a Democratic-led congressional committee.

Trump filed an urgent complaint with the court on Monday, alleging that the House Ways and Means Committee attempted to obtain the recordings for political purposes.

Roberts has stayed the case until the nine judges make a full decision and has given the committee until November 10 to respond.

Without his intervention, the committee could have gotten the records as early as Thursday.

It’s the latest twist in the long legal battle between the former president and Congress over his financial records.

In August, an appeals court sided with Ways and Means, saying they could gain access to his tax returns as part of an investigation into the IRS scrutiny process.

They were supposed to have access to the tax returns on Wednesday, before Judge Roberts issued the temporary stay.

Trump’s legal team asked the Supreme Court to intervene because the case raises “important separation of powers issues.”

“The only way to preserve these certiorari-worthy questions and avoid causing them [Trump, his eponymous family business, and other associated entities] An irreparable harm is that this court granted an administrative stay,” the filing reads.

If Trump’s appeal is successful, it could prevent the committee from receiving his paperwork for years.

And if Republicans take control of the House after the midterms, they’ll likely end the Democrats’ attempt to get their hands on the returns.

Trump has refused to release his tax returns, relying on the courts to keep them under wraps.

Most other presidents regularly release their statements, but they are kept confidential under federal law.
