Electricity in Kyiv, evacuations in Kherson… Update on the 251st day

Water and electricity were restored in Kyiv on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, following the Russian bombing of essential infrastructure. In the south of the country, in Kherson, new evacuations have been announced by the pro-Russian authorities.

In economic terms, three new cargo ships loaded with grain left in the morning, despite Russia’s decision to suspend its participation in the Ukrainian grain export agreement.

Water and electricity restored in Kyiv

Water and electricity supplies to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv were restored on Tuesday, a day after Russian bombing of critical infrastructure prompted massive cuts.

Russia has stepped up drone and missile attacks on water and electricity systems in Ukrainian cities since early October, prompting authorities to impose restrictions in places as a harsh winter approaches for Ukrainians.

Deliver “has been fully restored”declared the Mayor of Kyiv Vitali Klitschko, while almost 80% of the capital’s residents were without water and 350,000 households were without electricity.

New evacuations in Kherson

For their part, the Russian occupation authorities in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine have announced fresh evacuations of residents of that city, where Moscow troops are preparing for an imminent Ukrainian offensive.

After nearly 70,000 people were evacuated from the right bank of the Dnipro River last week, pro-Russian officials began moving thousands more on Tuesday.

“We will resettle and transfer up to 70,000 people” currently in a 15-kilometer-deep strip east of the left bank of the river, Moscow-installed Kherson governor Vladimir Saldo said.

Ukraine condemns these evacuations as a “Deportation” residents of the region.

Russian drone strikes in central regions of the country

Elsewhere on the front lines, the Ukrainian presidency reported on Russian drone strikes in the Poltava and Dnipropetrovsk regions in the center of the country, as well as rocket attacks on several other locations.

According to Deputy Head of the Presidency Kyrylo Tymoshenko, five civilians have been killed and nine injured in Ukraine in the past 24 hours.

The Russian army, for its part, accused Ukraine of firing on Tuesday “more than twenty shells” to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, which occupies Moscow, and the nearby town of Energodar.

Three new freighters loaded with grain have left the ports of Ukraine

On the economic front, consultations between Russian and Turkish officials multiplied on Monday after Moscow decided to suspend the deal on Ukrainian grain exports, which are vital to global supplies.

Russia justified this decision with a Ukrainian attack on its fleet in the annexed Crimea. Kyiv, for its part, condemned a “false pretense” and assured to be ready to continue exporting.

Despite the withdrawal, three new cargo ships loaded with grain left Ukraine’s ports on Tuesday morning and headed for the Black Sea humanitarian corridor, according to the Istanbul-based Coordination Center responsible for overseeing these exports.

For Wednesday, the Joint Coordination Center (JCC), responsible for the international agreement on Ukrainian grain exports to the Black Sea, announced the suspension of all cargo movements.

To “The United Nations Secretariat at the Joint Coordination Center, the delegations of Ukraine, Russia and Turkey have agreed not to plan any movement of cargo ships under the Black Sea Grains Initiative on November 2.”the JCC said in a statement.

Erdogan exchanges views with Putin

In a telephone interview with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Russian head of state gave his verdict ” necessary “ from Kyiv “to obtain real guarantees of strict compliance with the Istanbul agreements, in particular that the humanitarian corridor will not be respected” used for military purposes”the Kremlin said in a statement.
