Pakistan to increase climate reparations at COP27

Islamabad, 1.11. (Prensa Latina) Pakistan hopes concrete action will be taken at the next UN climate conference that will force the world’s biggest polluters to pay for the damage to countries affected by global warming.

The COP27 climate summit will be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from November 6-18 and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan is expected to attend, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.

Egyptian President and COP27 Chair Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi invited Sharif to chair the COP27 Roundtable together with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.

The climate summit will be attended by world leaders, think tanks, heads of government and international financial institutions.

After devastating floods hit Pakistan and displaced millions of people, Shehbaz called for immediate international action on climate change on local and global platforms, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the UN General Assembly.

According to the latest Post-Disaster Needs Assessment report, Pakistan needs at least $16.3 billion for rehabilitation and reconstruction after the floods that caused $30.1 billion in damage and casualties.

The sectors that have suffered the most are housing, agriculture, food, livestock, fisheries, transport and communications.

Thus, Pakistan will join other developing countries in demanding climate reparations, an issue that rich nations have pushed off the agenda in recent years.
