The biggest French industrial groups, including the most polluting ones, are being invited by Emmanuel Macron to meet next Tuesday at the Elysée, franceinfo learned on Thursday, November 3, from sources close to the file.

As COP27 opens in Egypt this weekend, the President of the Republic wants to encourage TotalEnergies, Lafarge, Saint-Gobain and others to reduce their carbon footprint faster. However, for fear of resettlement, the government is also considering support measures.
According to information from franceinfo, Emmanuel Macron will therefore tell French industrialists that the state will support them in the face of rising CO2 prices, while the European Commission plans to further tighten the rules of the European market, for example by gradually abolishing quotas, current giveaways for specific industrial sectors. In particular, the Elysée is working on a kind of ecological shield with incentives but also sanctions to avoid competition between states.
The government aims to encourage them to rapidly develop greener sectors like low-carbon hydrogen to gain market share in international competition. Above all, the executive would like to encourage these industrial sites to continue their production on French territory, rather than settling in the United States, China or Brazil, where decarbonization constraints are less strong. Especially since the government estimates that these 50 manufacturers alone represent nearly 30,000 jobs across the territory.
