Biontech tests combination vaccine against “Flurone”

German biotechnology company Biontech and its partner Pfizer are starting a clinical trial with a combined Covid-19 and flu vaccine.

The vaccine candidate combines the omicron BA.4/BA.5 booster already approved by the two companies with an influenza vaccine candidate from Pfizer, which is currently being tested in a Phase 3 clinical trial. The word “Flurone” is made up of the word “Corona” and “Flu” – English for flu.

180 people in the US aged 18 to 64 will participate in the phase 1 study with the combination vaccine, and the first subject has already been vaccinated this week. “By combining both indications in a vaccine approach, we want to offer people an efficient way to immunize themselves against two serious respiratory diseases,” says Ugur Sahin, head of Biontech.
