Amy Schumer says she took her Will Smith joke past the actor ahead of the 2022 Oscars: ‘I’ve been burned too many times’

Amy Schumer said she informed everyone she planned to joke about at the 2022 Oscars, including Will Smith, ahead of the ceremony.

The comedian, who co-hosted the event with Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes, made jokes aimed at Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kirsten Dunst.

In a new interview on SiriuxXM’s The Howard Stern Show, Schumer has confirmed that the targets of their jokes knew what was to come and pre-approved the digs.

“I reached out to people I wanted to joke about before and made sure they were okay with it because I’ve been burned too many times,” she said, adding that she “didn’t want that to happen.” camera cuts to someone looking sad”.

“I told the Williams sisters, I told Will, I told Leo,” she said, confirming they all greenlit their jokes.

Speaking onstage about King Richard — the film about the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams, for which Smith won Best Actor — Schumer had joked, “After years of Hollywood ignoring womanizing, this year is finally here get a movie about the incredible Williams sisters dad.”

Elsewhere on the show, she poked fun at DiCaprio’s habit of dating much younger women, and she visited Jesse Plemons in the audience while pretending not to recognize his wife, Oscar-nominated actress Kirsten Dunst.

Although Plemons and Dunst participated in the joke, Schumer said she received death threats because of it.

One person who didn’t seem to get his jokes past Smith before the ceremony was Chris Rock. The comedian joked about Smith’s wife Jada’s shaved haircut, which resulted in the actor taking to the stage and slapping him in the face.

As a result, Smith resigned from the academy and was banned from its events for 10 years.
