Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits Brazilian theaters next week, the new movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that promises to be one of the biggest boxoffice hits of the year.

The production, in turn written and directed by Ryan Coogler, faced the challenge of losing its protagonist, the eternal Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 after battling colon cancer for four years.
The production chose not to replace Chadwick Boseman after his death, meaning we’re more likely to see T’Challa’s farewell in Black Panther 2 than another actor to fill the role. And for the Wakanda Forever Podcast, director Ryan Coogler gave the best answer as to why he was even considering replacing Chadwick.
In an interview with TaNehisi Coates, Coogler first shared some of his thoughts after learning of the loss of his friend and colleague:
“You think of everything when something like this happens. I went through extremes like ‘I don’t think I can go back and do another’, ‘I don’t think I can do it’, ‘I don’t think there should be another film’.
But then the director gave a long answer, wondering why it wasn’t emotionally and psychologically possible to put another actor in the role of T’Challa, for him or for any other member of the production. Consequences:
“It would be a complicated statement for me to say that we didn’t even consider recasting the role. My job as a director, and I don’t think people fully appreciate a job that isn’t theirs, is to be as real as possible every day, because it’s several hundred days, long days, to make other professionals believe in ideas that I believe to be true. This is my job. I have to believe in something enough to persuade other professionals to believe it too, over a long period of time. And the moment I stop believing in what I’m doing, every end product will suffer. It’s over. It must be true for me. And if there’s any element of that that’s not right, it’s my job to eliminate that.”
Ryan Coogler continued to explain that Chadwick Boseman represented Black Panther truth:
“And my truth is that Chadwick lost the physical feeling that he wasn’t going through that door. And in this world that we’ve created over the years, he was the man. So that someone else could be him for us in this world that we made we just wouldn’t have believed it. No matter how good the actor was, it didn’t matter, we would lack the truth we need to do a good job. Our truth has been lost, which is a fact of life, it is its gift and its curse. Heroes and great men die.”
Because of this, Black Panther 2 picks up right after T’Challa’s death, with Coogler trying to honor both the hero and actor image that left us in the film. Forever Wakanda hits theaters on November 10th.
