Seven dead in helicopter crash in southern Italy

A helicopter with seven people on board crashed in the southern Adriatic region of Apulia on Saturday. Two Italian crew members, a family of four Slovenian tourists and an Italian doctor died, officials said on Saturday.

The helicopter, which took off from the Tremiti Islands in Puglia towards the Adriatic town of Foggia, disappeared from radar around 10:30 am. The A109 – helicopter used in civil and military aviation – was spotted in an agricultural area. At the time of the disappearance, a storm was raging at the crash site and 40 Italian military personnel participated in the search for the helicopter. The Tremiti Islands in the southern Adriatic are a popular holiday destination.
