There’s a new witcher in town and he’s sharpening his blades.

On October 29th Henry Cavill shocked The Witcher fans when he announced his departure from the hit Netflix series. The actor, who plays Geralt of Rivia, shared a photo of the show’s coin symbols as well as a lengthy message on Instagram, explaining that he was “getting down [his] medallion and [his] Sword for Season 4.”

That’s not all. His character won’t die with him – Henry heralded the “fantastic”. Liam Hemsworth as his White Wolf replacement. “As with the greatest characters in literature, I pass the torch with awe at the time I’ve spent impersonating Geralt and with enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most intriguing and nuanced man,” he captioned the post.

The Enola Holmes star added: “Liam good sir there is such wonderful depth to this character, have fun diving in and see what you can find.”

As the main protagonist of the series, Henry’s departure news definitely hit The Witcher fans hard. Many expressed mixed feelings of anger, disappointment and pain under the post.

“I won’t lie, it would be better to just stop the series… this is really disappointing 💔,” one person commented. “Such a shame! Geralt was practically made for you, and you made him your own. Hemsworth is a great actor, but this role and this character are only made for one person, and that is you, Mr. [Cavill]!” said another person. “This is the worst news I’ve ever heard,” added another.

Many fans were confused by the sudden departure, with some even speculating that he was giving up his starring role to focus on his portrayal as Superman. “Whaaatt??? And Liam?! Do not get me wrong. Great actor but no Geralt at all… Is that [because] from [your] Superman role? 😢” someone asked.

The story goes on

It turns out it’s not too much of a leap, as the Man of Steel star had a cameo in DC’s Black Adam mid-credits. Henry fueled the rumors even more by also posting a cryptic video as a superhero on Instagram, writing the accompanying caption: “A very small taste of what’s to come my friends. The beginning of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded. #Superman.” It’s a head scratcher indeed…

Meanwhile, the Hunger Games star also took to Instagram to express his gratitude for his newfound role. As a fan of the show, he wrote that he was “over the moon at the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia”.

Additionally, Liam alluded to the show’s dedicated fan base, saying he was “honored” to take on the show. “Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character,” he said in the caption.

The ‘The Last Song’ star added, ‘I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m really excited to step into the world of The Witcher. @henrycavill @witchernetflix.”
