HUSTON – Shortstop Jordan Thompson started a home run to bring out the bottom of the 11th inning on Friday, raising the third-ranked LSU to a 5-4 victory over Oklahoma at the Shriners College Classic in Minute Maid Park.
LSU improved to 9-1 with their sixth straight win, while Oklahoma fell to 5-3.
LSU will face the best of Texas at 7pm CT Saturday at Minute Maid Park. The game will be broadcast by the branches of LSU Sports Radio Network.
Louisiana fans can watch the game on AT&T SportsNet Southwest television or broadcast it on Astros.com, Astros Twitter, Facebook and YouTube accounts and the MLB app. In addition, AT&T SportsNet SW subscribers can also stream games live in the AT&T SportsNet app.
Outside of Louisiana and the five-state Astros, the game will also be televised on the MLB Network.
Leading from the bottom of the 11th against Oklahoma’s Griffin Miller (0-1), Thompson hit the fourth pitcher of the inning in the left field to give the Tigers the victory. Dinger was Thompson’s first of the season and Homer’s second to drop out of his career. He also hit Homer in the 13th inning last season to beat UT San Antonio 10-9.
Bryce Collins (1-0), LSU’s seventh pitcher in the game, was credited with victory on Friday after withdrawing the last OU striker at the top of the 11th with a green light at second base.
“I can’t say enough about the endurance of our bats and the way our players competed,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “There are a lot of talents in our squad, but tonight I think the makeup of our character and the competing bats did that for us.
“We have good players, but they are also tough. You cannot win such games unless you have a competitive nature and makeup. These kinds of victories are really valuable because they demonstrate who our players are, both people and their baseball talent. ”
Oklahoma led 3-0 at the bottom of the seventh inning when LSU left-back Gavin Dugas delivered an RBI single against reveler Devin Michael for the Tigers’ first run of the game.
The Tigers tied for game eighth when first baseman Tre ‘Morgan doubled and second baseman Cade Douty made a double Homer in the right.
However, the Souners regained the lead at the top of the 10th, when center-back Tanner Tredaway scored and scored in the double by hunter Jimmy Crooks.
Morgan and Doutie teamed up again to level the bottom of the race in 10th place against Relief Jarrett Godman. Morgan raised a double on the left field and after center-back Dylan Crews fouled, Doutie hit a double on the left field line to drive in the equalizer series.
Trent Vietmeyer and Collins combined 11th place with zero, setting the stage for Thompson’s heroism.
Both starting pitchers have become effective outcomes – LSU right-back Blake Money runs 6.2 innings, allowing only one run to win with eight hits in one walk and seven outs. Oklahoma starter Jake Bennett also made 6.2 innings and limited the Tigers to one run with three hits in one walk and four outs.
“Blake was exceptional, he gave us a great performance,” said Johnson. “His preparation was great, his things were great; this is a good Oklahoma squad that he went through and we can’t win this game in extra innings if he doesn’t direct as long as he did. “
