In Iran, police reportedly shot again at opposition protesters. People took to the streets in the city of Marivan. A woman was killed during demonstrations on Saturday.

During the protests in Iran, police are said to have opened fire on the protesters again. According to eyewitnesses, tear gas was also used. Dozens of protesters were injured, according to the Oslo-based human rights organization Hengaw. Deaths were also feared.

People took to the streets in the northwestern city of Marivan. They say they attacked the office of a member of parliament. The information cannot be independently confirmed.

Response to the death of a protester

A young Kurdish girl was reportedly killed in Marivan on Saturday after taking part in an opposition demonstration. As in recent weeks, state media rejected the accusation that the police had used violence against the people. Human rights activists assume that since the demonstrations began seven weeks ago in Iran, more than 300 people have been killed by security forces or paramilitary groups.

In mid-September, protests began over the death of 22-year-old Kurdish Mahsa Amini in police custody. She had been arrested by the vice squad for allegedly wearing her headscarf inappropriately.

Protesters demand the fall of the Iranian government

Initially, the protests were directed against the dress code. Protesters are now demanding the downfall of the Iranian government. The country’s universities are among the centers of resistance against the Iranian leadership. In Kurdish areas, security forces are said to be particularly tough on protests.

Majority of Parliament Calls for Severe Penalties

The Iranian parliament has called for severe penalties for the detained protesters, Iranian state media reported. Thus, 227 of the 290 deputies would have asked the judiciary to make harsh judgments. They accuse the protesters of a “war on God” that could lead to the death penalty, and, like the government, blame the United States for the unrest. Hardliners and conservatives have a majority in the Iranian parliament. Elections are held every four years, but the Council of Guardians decides which candidates can run.
