Eva Mendes reveals she took a step back from acting after being offered ‘crappy roles’ but would return for a ‘great role’

After recently clarifying that she hasn’t “given up” from acting, Eva Mendes elaborated on why she hasn’t appeared in a movie in the past eight years.

The 48-year-old actress may have returned to voice a yoga teacher on the children’s animated series Bluey, but she hasn’t been in a movie since her partner Ryan Gosling wrote and directed 2014’s Lost River to see.

Mendes recently appeared on Australian podcast Fitzy and Wippa, where she revealed she had retired from acting for her children, but also because she was being offered **** roles.

When asked what would make her want to return, Mendes said, “Yeah, well, for a great role.”

“I was just, you know … I was taking time off to be with the kids because they were just so small. Now they’re six and our older one just turned eight,” she added.

“But it’s also because, you know, can I say a bad word? They were pretty crappy roles that I was offered and I was tired of taking them,” she clarified.

“I was fed up, you know what, it’s not worth it. You know, if I’m going away for a few months and you know, it better be something damn good,” she added.

Mendes was also asked if there’s ever a specific moment in a script — or even a page — that solidifies her decision to pass on a project.

“Sometimes there is a side. When the character is introduced and you know what I mean?’ She said.

“Sometimes it’s a side, but usually I try to give it fully, but sometimes halfway you just say, ‘I’ll never do that, I’ll never do that,'” she added.

In a recent Instagram comment from October, she also cleared up talk that she’s “retired” from acting.

“I never stopped acting. I wanted to be home with my babies and luckily my other business endeavors allowed me more than acting,” Mendes said.

“Also, I wasn’t keen on the stereotypical roles I was offered at the time,” she continued, before revealing what her “dream project” was.

“Especially after working on the film Lost River – it was a dream project. That’s a difficult plot to follow,” Mendes said.

Mendes has been dating Ryan Gosling since 2011 with their daughters born in 2014 and 2016.
