According to a newspaper report, US national security adviser Jake Sullivan is trying to ease nuclear tensions in the Ukraine war. The Wall Street Journal reports that Sullivan has had confidential conversations in recent months with Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov and Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, which have not been made public.
The talks came as the government in Moscow ramped up its nuclear rhetoric, repeatedly accusing Ukraine of planning to deploy a radioactive “dirty bomb” without solid evidence.
Ukraine has repeatedly stated that it does not intend to use such a bomb. In return, the Kyiv government accused Russia of having these plans of its own, only to blame Ukraine for using these weapons, which are banned worldwide.
