Ukraine: Von der Leyen hears Zelensky, 1.5 billion in a month politics

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke to her Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy today. The focus of the discussion was the pledge of EU financial support to Kyiv in the coming months of up to €1.5 billion per month for a total of €18 billion, which will help significantly to meet Ukraine’s financial needs for 2023. The phone call follows the Announcement by the President at the end of the last European Council.

Both leaders recognized the importance of ensuring predictable and regular funding for essential government functions. Support in the form of highly subsidized long-term loans with interest cost coverage would also help support Ukraine’s reforms and its path to EU membership. President von der Leyen confirmed ongoing work to continue emergency humanitarian aid to Ukraine, especially during the winter.

The leaders also discussed the importance of ensuring that Ukraine’s agricultural exports can reach the world. Finally, the leaders discussed the tightening of sanctions and the negative role played by Iran’s support for Russian aggression and how to respond.
