US lottery with jackpot of 1.9 billion dollars

In the US, the record jackpot of the Powerball lottery has increased again and now stands at $1.9 billion (1.91 billion euros). The jackpot was not re-baked in Saturday’s draw and thus grew by another 300 million dollars, as the operator has now announced. The next draw is today.

The jackpot has been growing steadily since the last winner in early August. Since then, in 40 draws, no one has matched six numbers.

In January 2016, three Powerball players shared the biggest jackpot in history, worth $1.586 billion. The second biggest jackpot – and the biggest single player win – was worth $1.537 billion and was hit in October 2018 in the Mega Millions lottery.

Powerball lottery tickets cost two dollars and are sold in 45 US states, as well as the Washington DC metropolitan area, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The chance of winning the jackpot is about one in 292 million. For comparison, the risk of being struck by lightning in the United States is about one in a million.
