MANAGUA, 7 October (RHC) The President of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Nicaragua, Gustavo Porras, reiterated in this capital that the country is now building a different model with an inclusive democracy.
During a meeting with the media this morning and in anticipation of the first preliminary results of the previous day’s municipal elections, Porras reiterated Nicaraguans’ call to peace.
“We reaffirmed it very early on, with massive participation and a sense that we are making progress,” said the MP for the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN).
Likewise, it signified the value of the elections, in which the people elected 6,088 officials, including mayors, deputy mayors and councilors for the country’s 153 municipalities.
According to the MP, the election exercise held is the greatest manifestation of independence, self-determination and sovereignty as it shows Nicaraguans making their own way.
According to press reports, hundreds of people on motorcycles and vehicles in caravans drove to public squares in various capitals in the early hours of Monday to await the results.
Images broadcast on local television showed the joy of residents taking to the streets with red and black flags in support of the Unida Nicaragua Triunfa coalition led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front.
According to the register, almost four million people were called to this competition, in which 15 parties divided into two alliances and four political formations took part. (Source/PL)
