Argentine President Alberto Fernández will hold the XV. Inaugurate Regional Conference for Women in Latin America and the Caribbean organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in coordination with the United Nations Organization for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). The main theme of the meeting is “The Nursing Society: Horizon for Sustainable Recovery with Gender Justice”.
The opening ceremony, to be held at the Sheraton Hotel on Tuesday, November 8 at 4:00 pm in Argentina (GMT-3) will be attended by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC; Ayelén Mazzina, Minister for Women, Gender and Diversity of Argentina; Antonia Orellana, Chilean Minister for Women and Gender Justice; María-Noel Vaeza, Regional Director for the Americas and the Caribbean at UN Women; Claudia Mojica, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Argentina; and Gabriel Boric, President of Chile, in his capacity as the country holding the outgoing Chair of the Regional Conference (via video).
The Regional Conference for Women in Latin America and the Caribbean is the United Nations’ premier regional intergovernmental forum on women’s rights and gender equality. The gathering, which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year, will be attended by representatives from governments, United Nations and intergovernmental organizations, academia and civil society, particularly women’s and feminist movements.
On Wednesday 9th, ECLAC will present the position paper The Care Society: Horizon towards a Sustainable Gender Equality Recovery, which highlights the urgency of implementing a change in development style towards a care society, where the interdependence between people is recognized, and the interdependence between production processes and society; a caring society that puts the sustainability of human life and the planet at the heart of development.
Two documents will be released on Thursday 10th: The Funding of Care Systems and Policies in Latin America and the Caribbean: Contributions to Sustainable Recovery with Gender Equality, Prepared by ECLAC and UN Women, and Breaking the Statistical Silence to the Gender equality to be achieved by 2030: application of the information systems axis of the Montevideo strategy for the implementation of the regional gender agenda within the framework of sustainable development by 2030, prepared by ECLAC within the framework of two subsidiary bodies: the Statistical Conference of the Americas and the Regional Conference on Women.
The program of the XV. The regional women’s conference includes a high-level debate on the care society in the region, two thematic panel discussions – on financing care and caring for the planet – and a roundtable on shared responsibility for care.
Before the opening of the meeting, a parliamentary forum will be held on Monday, November 7th and the morning of November 8th, and various civil society activities will be organized, including a forum of feminist organizations. At least 30 parallel events are also planned.
