A woman, Marielys del Carmen Yedr, has been arrested in Venezuela for offering a human kidney for $20,000 on social media, Attorney General Tarek William Saab said Saturday night.
“Following postings in which he illegally offered a $20,000 kidney through *Marketplace*, the whereabouts of one of the people who made this type of offering was traced and it was possible to trace the content of the posting to his check phone,” prosecutors said on Twitter.
Reports are circulating on social media about organ sales via Facebook, which police say has also been used for fraud and other kidnappingrelated crimes.
The prosecutor accompanied his tweet with photos of the woman’s advertisement in the marketplace offering “a 15yearold girl’s kidney in perfect condition.” It is not clear where the organ came from.
According to William Saab, the detainee, Marielys del Carmen Yedr, is charged with “charitable donation.” The public prosecutor’s office is checking whether there is a “criminal network” behind this type of publication.
