A forest fire broke out in Lake Maggiore in northern Italy over the weekend and destroyed several hectares. Firefighters in Angera, in Varese province, have been fighting the flames since Friday night. Several families had to leave their homes and, according to the Ansa news agency, were initially unable to return on Saturday.

Two helicopters and three firefighting aircraft were deployed on the border between the Lombardy and Piedmont regions, as reported by the fire department. According to local TV station Rete55, the fire was brought under control just before noon on Saturday.

unclear cause

The cause of the fire was initially unknown. There shouldn’t be any injuries. Recently, there have also been larger forest fires on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore, which have been favored, among other things, by the remarkably dry conditions. Areas in the canton of Ticino were affected.
