The team stumbled upon this piece of history purely by accident. First, she searched for the remains of an airplane that went missing in the Bermuda Triangle during World War II. The goal then was to make a documentary about the mysterious disappearance of planes and boats in this area of the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast. Because of this we have pictures this extraordinary discovery made last spring. Aired November 22, some excerpts were released by the American History Channel.
On the video we see two divers at the bottom of the ocean. Surrounded by fish, they gently release small black squares from under the sand. These are the iconic thermal protection tiles that covered the entire underside of the ship so it could withstand the infernal heat of its return to the atmosphere. The visible part is about 4.5 by 4.5 meters. Buried the piece that stretches under the sand, the total size of which we do not know at the moment. But it’s already one of the biggest pieces found after this tragedy that shaped space history, NASA confirmed.
