Canada: Toronto rocked by shooting outside a mosque

Yesterday, Saturday, Toronto, one of Canada’s most important cities, was rocked by an incident that almost turned into a tragedy: a shooting of believers in front of the mosque.

In fact, five Muslim worshipers were the target of a shooting as they exited a mosque in Scarborough, a town near the Canadian city of Toronto (centre).

The five Muslim devotees, aged between 28 and 35, were severely attacked in the mosque’s parking lot just as they finished their prayers. The five men suffered serious injuries but the worst is over, according to local press.

Is this an Islamophobic attack?

In a press statement, police spokesman David Rydzik revisited the case and said the victims were “accidentally” attacked.

“It is too early to say this is a hate crime, but our hate crime unit is investigating and working with the local community (…) There is every reason to believe that the victims were randomly attacked,” he said.

“The five people were struck by bullets which we believe came from a vehicle traveling on Markham Street. They were only here for the prayers. They gather here because they are fasting all day,” added the police spokesman.
