Vivo has formalized its first foldable smartphone in China, the X Fold. A direct competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Vivo X Fold uses the Korean giant’s book format.
Vivo X Fold formalized: an ambitious first foldable smartphone
Manufacturer Vivo has just launched its first-ever foldable smartphone called the X Fold in China. After numerous leaks and rumours, the Chinese manufacturer launches an attack on a market currently dominated by Samsung and its Galaxy Fold.
“The X Fold is the first of its kind within the Vivo range and embodies the brand’s vision of the premium smartphone by exploring a new form factor to offer a more efficient, convenient and innovative smartphone experience,” explains the builder.
In order to fold the smartphone, the hinge requires special work with materials from aviation: Vivo promises “more than 300,000 folding and unfolding processes”.
Two large screens and premium features
There are two screens that are essentially identical except for their size. The first, which can be used when the phone is folded, displays a 6.53-inch diagonal, while the more imposing interior offers a comfortable 8.03-inch diagonal.
Both use an AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, protected by Gorilla Glass Victus glass. In addition, there is an ultrasonic fingerprint reader under each of the screens.
The technical sheet is very solid: the technical sheet of the device. This includes very high-end: a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, supported by 12 GB of RAM and internal storage of 256 GB or 512 GB.The battery size is 4,600 mAh, with 66W wired fast charging, 50W wireless.
For the photo part, Vivo also hit hard with a partnership with Zeiss. The rear of the X Fold includes a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 48-megapixel ultra wide-angle, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with x2 zoom, and finally an 8-megapixel module with x5 periscope zoom. Promising equipment, supported by a 16-megapixel front camera.
For now, the Vivo X Fold will only be sold in China, starting at 8999 CNY (for the 12+256GB version) or around 1300 euros. It will be available from April 22nd and will be available in light blue and gray colors.
