Gabriel Costa, 17, son of Gal Costa, spoke to Fantástico (TV Globo) today for the first time since the death of his mother. The singer, who died last Tuesday (8), adopted her twoyearold son in a home in Rio de Janeiro.
He said he was shy and reserved, unlike his mother, who led a public life. But after thinking about the singer’s fans, she decided to do the interview and reveal details of her relationship with Gal and Wilma Petrillo, the singer’s partner of over 20 years, whom she calls her godmother.
“She was very sensitive. Very affectionate. I said, ‘Mom, for heaven’s sake. […] There were times when I wanted to be quiet, still, and she came clinging to me, hugging, kissing. I said, ‘Mom, for God’s sake,'” he said.
The young man says that Gal liked to be called “Mother” but he jokingly called her by other names to provoke.
“Neither Gal Costa, nor Boss, nor Crown. Nothing. I said, ‘What’s up, Crown? What’s up, my boss?’ She didn’t like it. She liked being called mom,” he said.
Mother and son also agreed when it came to school: “As long as I passed the class, I was fine.”
Gabriel also said that he regretted his behavior as a teenager because he wasn’t closer to his mother.
I didn’t really enjoy my mother’s presence here. I didn’t spend much time talking to her and my godmother. I played, watched series. I should have enjoyed it more.

Relationship with “Gal Artist”
Gabriel says that it was only after his mother’s death that he understood her artistic dimension.
“I had the vision that she is my mother. I didn’t have her dimension as a singer. I didn’t realize that until her wake. Wake will be open to the public before the ceremony.
However, Gal’s voice was something he appreciated and said he liked it, especially when it made its famous high pitch.
“It was the best part of her voice. The high pitch that a lot of people can’t get [atingir]he praised, saying his favorite album is Estratosférica and the song Cuidando de Longe in collaboration with Marília Mendonça.
Gabriel also spoke about the sadness and legacy Gal is leaving in Brazilian music.
“I know my mother is up there watching me. I will remain firm and strong and follow,” he said.
From what I’ve heard and what I’ve known [ela] was a woman who revolutionized the whole world in her own way. Be original, be yourself, be Gal Costa. She spread it all over the world.
