Tom Brady says he tried to stop the disastrous trick

Tom Brady says he tried to stop the disastrous trick play that saw him fall flat on his face and throw an interception for Leonard Fournette

  • Tom Brady and the Buccaneers secured a 21-16 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Munich on Sunday.

  • During a trick play attempt, running back Leonard Fournette threw a pass intended for Brady, which was intercepted.

  • After the game, Brady said he tried to call off the game before the snap.

Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their second straight game on Sunday and headed to Munich, Germany to defeat the Seattle Seahawks 21-16.

While the Buccaneers were able to pull off a relatively comfortable win, the game was not without its pitfalls, most notably a bad stumble on an attempted trick play by Brady.

Leading 14-3 in the third quarter, Brady and the Buccaneers decided to put on a show for fans in Germany.

Standing at first-and-10 at the top of the red zone, Brady positioned himself on the left side of the snap as a wide receiver, while running back Leonard Fournette was ready for a direct shotgun snap from the middle.

It looked like the Buccaneers were just attempting a bit of wildcat offense, but after faking the ball for a run, Fournette reappeared and threw a ball in Brady’s direction.

Things fell apart quickly.

Brady slipped on the turf, leaving Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen as the only man with a play on the ball. He made the catch and gave Fournette the first interception of his career.

Adding a little insult to injury, Brady was called upon to stumble over the play, giving the Seahawks an additional 10 yards of field position.

Although the game ended in a hilarious way, it’s not entirely surprising that the Buccaneers tried given how the Seahawks had defended Brady earlier in the game.

In a previous Wildcat game, Seattle left Brady completely uncovered as he switched to a decoy position so Fournette could take the direct snap.

In that game, Fournette was rushing for a short win, but it seems the Buccaneers thought they could make it easy for the Seahawks by dialing in a similar look.

The story goes on

“I was hoping to be wide open and I was probably in the first one,” Brady said after the game. “I think they were pretty enlightened by the second, and they were like, ‘Cover him, cover him,’ and I was standing on the sidelines trying to yell, ‘Lenny, no!’

“But it was too late and the ball went up in the air and I just tried – whatever, jump up and knock it down, but I ended up falling on my face.”

“That would have been pretty funny,” Brady concluded the play. “I think I had a few catches. However, I have never had a touchdown.”

Luckily for Brady, it all worked out in the end. On the very next drive, Brady linked with wide receiver Chris Godwin for a touchdown strike that gave the Buccaneers a 21-3 lead and enough breathing room to claim the win.
