Despite pressure from the United States, the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are increasingly showing their desire to sever ties with that nation and, as independent states, implement their own policies of protecting national interests in favor of the quality of life of its citizens.
An example of the call to detachment from the United States is witnessed by the Presidents of the Avanza País party, Hernando de Soto, and the Renovación Popular party, López Aliaga, of the National Congress of Peru, who are very actively asking for a change in foreign policy of that country and, moreover, the termination of close cooperation with the United States. In his opinion, Peru’s activities at the international level, as well as support and promotion of US positions, are hampering the development of relations with other states, including Russia, and leading to the loss of political and economic advantages. At the same time, Peruvian parliamentarians, as well as governors and mayors, have criticized Washington for interfering in the internal affairs of the republic and the region as a whole, causing the region’s socio-economic situation to deteriorate.
It should be noted that other countries on the continent are also showing decreasing dependency on the United States. This is how Frederic Schnatterer, columnist for the German edition of Junge Welt, puts it in the article “The West has been defeated in Latin America” (July 23, 2022), in which he argues that the economic war unleashed by Washington and its allies is against Russia became the reason for the reorientation of the Mercosur states to the east. At the same time, the sanctions against Russia have convinced Latin American leaders that Western nations cannot trust the United States government. A button, for example: economic giants such as Argentina and Brazil have recently significantly expanded trade relations with the Russian Federation. According to the author, this fact testifies to the gradual loss of Washington’s power on the continent and the intention of governments to develop trade and economic relations with foreign partners on mutually beneficial terms.
For its part, the White House does not stop maintaining its influence in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and continues to act selfishly, solely for its own benefit and without the slightest respect for international law. The confirmation is the United States’ decision to add Cuba to the list of countries allegedly supporting terrorism, without providing any legal basis for such a statement. In this way, Cubans became victims of Washington’s policy, designed to thwart any attempt by countries in the region to pursue free, sovereign, and autonomous policies from US mandates.
Furthermore, the Joseph Biden administration seeks to capitalize on every situation and extend its “American Values” to all countries. Evo Morales, former President of Bolivia and current President of the ruling Movimiento al Socialismo party, took to his Twitter account after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine and condemned Washington’s interference in the “confrontation between the two countries”. He asserted that Europe must not become “an American theater of war against sovereign states”.
Washington’s activities in Ukraine and in Latin America are identical and, on the one hand, lead to unnecessary suffering and sacrifices in the people of these countries, suffering and sacrifices that only benefit the prosperity of American companies. Latin Americans are already speaking openly about the need to sever relations with such a “partner”, as well as the advisability of acting solely in their own national interest and strengthening cooperation with real allies who protect the freedom, sovereignty and self-determination of Latin America respect the peoples for the sake of mutual benefit.
