Pyongyang conducted another test last night, launching an ICBM that fell into the waters of the Sea of Japan. The move has drawn strong condemnation from the US and countries in the region, and tensions are running high.

For the first time, the North Korean leader publicly showed his daughter in the images of the ICBM test. State news agency KCNA limited itself to reporting that Kim “personally supervised” the launch “along with his beloved daughter and wife,” North Korean First Lady Ri Sol-ju, without giving any further details about the young woman.

Five photos, among the twenty snaps released by KCNA from the previous day’s test, show a girl in a white coat listening to her father, who appears to be giving directions to officers around her, and remotely contemplating rocket removal with Kim, taking off or going hand in hand in hand with him next to the projectile shuttle before launch.
North Korean state media rarely leaks information about close relatives of the Kim dynasty, which has ruled the country with an iron fist since the 1940s. This daughter of Kim Jong-un is no exception as official propaganda had never acknowledged her existence before. Kim would have had three children with Ri – in 2010, 2012 or 2013 and 2017 – without being able to give much more information.

After one of his extravagant visits to North Korea to meet Kim Jong-un, former US basketball player Dennis Rodman said publicly in 2013 that he was holding his “daughter Ju-ae”, then a baby. It was the only time anyone named a descendant of the North Korean dictator. It is not known whether the girl in the photos published on KCNA is the aforementioned Kim Ju-ae or an older sister.
