Last month, DC fans reveled in Henry Cavill’s surprise appearance as Superman in Black Adam, before he revealed shortly afterwards that he’s ready to reprise the role in a follow-up Superman movie.
Between his comments and those of Dwayne Johnson during the promotion of Black Adam, Cavill’s return seemed set in stone. It was widely believed that Cavill’s abrupt exit from The Witcher was the reason he “released” his schedule to return to the Superman role.
That’s not the case, according to The Wrap. The outlet has been in touch with numerous insiders, and reports that a writer is currently being sought for a Man of Steel sequel are incorrect (or at least premature).
They say no writer or director is currently associated with the project, and indeed there is no formal deal with Cavill to return at this time. In addition, there is currently “no forward momentum” in the project.
Much of this comes as newly installed DC Studio bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran are busy tweaking their long-term plan for the DCU, which is reportedly set to be unveiled in the next two months.
Cavill’s future as Superman has been the subject of speculation for years, with his performance in “Black Adam” marking his first glimpse of the role in six years – although an alternative and warmly received version of an earlier performance was released in 2021’s “Zack Snyder’s” Justice League “.
Reports have surfaced on fan sites that Cavill will appear as Superman in next year’s movie The Flash.
