A man walking down a beach excursion in Wales came across hundreds of whiteshelled creatures clinging to a tree trunk. But later he discovered that it was a curious treasure linked to the world of gastronomy.
The mysterious creatures were actually swannecked barnacles also known as barnacles a common crustacean in the region that is eaten as a culinary delicacy and costs R$515 per kilo, according to UK website NorthWales Live.
Dave McGirr was on vacation when he was amazed to see the barnacles clinging to the 20foot log. He immediately started taking photos. Through a Google search, I learned that barnacles are highly prized seafood.
“I discovered that it is the swannecked barnacles that are described as rare ‘alien’ sea creatures. They are considered a delicacy,” the tourist said in a post on social media. According to him, his discovery was worth approximately BRL 25,700.
The rare crustacean species are prized in countries like Portugal and Spain, where they can be found at prices of R$1,900 per kilo.
Dave’s photos circulated on social media, but many believed the creatures looked strange enough to be from another planet.
“Aliens have landed!” commented one follower. “If you get closer you can see that they are like little squid or squid,” said another follower.
