Once he arrives in Panama at noon today, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will hold a dialogue with the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo, on key issues: Russia and China, according to the media.

Blinken arrives to attend the ministerial conference on migration, two days which local chancellery says is expected to be attended by representatives from about 20 nations of the continent.

The newspaper La Estrella de Panamá explained that the international reaction to the events of the war between Moscow and Kyiv will also focus on the exchange between the head of US diplomacy and his counterpart Erika Mouynes.

The United States hopes its partners in the region will respect the sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation by the European Union and Washington, the newspaper added, including financial institutions and private companies with ties to the Eurasian nation.

More clearly, analyst Antonio Saldaña noted in his recent article in El Periódico de Panamá that the real goal of visiting the isthmus is to align the “backyard” with the drafts of the North American war strategy promoted by Joe Biden.

It is worth noting that, in addition to Blinken, the White House delegation also includes Secretary of State for National Security Alejandro Mayorkas, who arrived with a vanguard the previous day.

Relations with China, with which they established diplomatic ties in 2017, will also occupy a part of bilateral talks between Washington and Panama, the morning paper adds.

In this vein, La Estrella cites statements by another member of the US delegation, Undersecretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Brian Nichols, who told the press: “We’re not saying there’s no trade with China, but we’re saying open-ended ones Eyes.”

The official urged them to understand what’s on the table and how China and its companies will use their data when engaged in data processing business, such as B. 5G, a theme that will extend to Latin American “partners”.

Tonight at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Panama will be the inaugural session of the regional meeting on migration that will serve as a prelude to the Summit of the Americas to be held June 6-10 in Los Angeles, California, USA next.

Therefore, as a result of the meeting, the US delegation aims to adopt a statement on the protection of migrants to the larger meeting.

To that end, participating countries will discuss a comprehensive migration agreement that will help protect populations and improve information sharing between authorities and governments.

However, White House envoys will approach the causes of migration from a different perspective: the collaborative effort through a $1.2 billion funding plan promoted by US Vice President Kamala Harris for investments in northern Central America, according to analysts.

The issue occupies a prominent place on the destination agenda for hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans crossing Panama’s borders to reach the United States.

Statistics from the National Immigration Service indicate that in the first quarter of 2022 alone, 13,425 people (17 percent minors) passed through the dangerous Darién Jungle bordering Colombia on their way to the United States, while they did so in the same period in 2021 registered 5,622.

The continental gathering comes weeks before Washington lifted border restrictions with Mexico, removing a rule allowing for the immediate expulsion of migrants, known as Title 42, which experts say would result in unpredictable flows.
