A new round of sanctions against Russia is imminent. The Italian government announced on Tuesday April 19 that the European Union and the United States “reached a broad consensus on the need to increase pressure on the Kremlin, in particular by adopting new sanctions”. Allies also agreed on the need to “enhance Moscow’s international isolation” as the war in Ukraine approaches 60 days.

The Italian announcement was confirmed by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a tweet “We will once again increase our sanctions against Russia.”

This position took place during a virtual meeting devoted to the Russian offensive in Ukraine between US President Joe Biden and key US allies, at a time when Moscow was unleashing a new phase of its attack in Donbass.

The Italian government’s press release also says that “the common commitment to diversifying energy sources by reducing dependence on Russian supplies in this way was reaffirmed during this video conference”.
