Venice mayor wants to regulate tourist flow

Starting in the summer in Venice, reservations are mandatory for those arriving in the historic center.

After the end of the corona pandemic, the flow of tourists in Italy is increasing again. 140,000 tourists were reported in Venice on Easter Sunday, on Easter Monday there was a rush of nearly 100,000. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro welcomed the large number of visitors after two years of the pandemic, but wants to regulate the flow of tourists in the summer.

From the summer onwards, reservations are mandatory for those arriving in the historic center. From next year, an entrance ticket for access to the city center will be introduced. “This is the right path and many people understood that today”, explained the mayor in an interview with the local newspaper “Corriere del Veneto” (Tuesday edition). The mayor’s idea is to create, in a few months, a computer platform the names of all those who intend to enter Venice.

First, there should be discounts and incentives for those who book. “We will be the first in the world to dare this experiment,” said Brugnaro.

While crown restrictions are gradually being relaxed in Italy, more and more tourists are returning to Venice. Before the start of the pandemic in February 2020, the lagoon city was constantly facing acute problems due to mass tourism.
