The good resolutions of the Steam Deck

One of the most commonly voiced complaints about the Steam Deck is its screen, which stupidly gets stuck at 60Hz like it did fifteen years ago. With such a panel you have the choice to constantly maintain 60 FPS, at the expense of planned details and an autonomy that takes a big swipe behind the head, and put up with 30 FPS, but in this case you would also have to buy a Switch, or even let the framerate do its thing, and shame for the tearing and pacing that will give a sense of permanently choppy animations.

However, this situation could change soon, as The Phawx shows in his latest video. Thanks to a little utility, he was actually able to force the screen to drop its refresh rate down to 40Hz, so games that couldn’t consistently hit 60 FPS and were hovering around 45 will have no problem maintaining the 40 FPS and thus perfectly along synchronized with the refresh of the disk.

The downside is that this hack currently only works on Windows. but according to Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais, it seems that Gaben and his troops are working on a similar solution for SteamOS that could arrive “soon” (don’t get too excited, we’re still talking about Valve). Very good news for all Steam Deck owners, and we can’t wait to see what Valve has in store for their little machine in the coming months.
