Jana Kramer is honest about her previous marriage.
During Tuesday’s episode of Kramer’s podcast Whine Down, the country music singer welcomed her ex-husband, actor Johnathon Schaech — and together, the two opened up about their relationship and what they’ve been through since they married in 2010.
One notable topic the couple covered was the reason for their split — and, looking back, they both understand why it shouldn’t be.
“We were two very unhealed souls who came together,” says Kramer, 38, Schaech, 52. “I tried to fill a gap – and you could never have satisfied my need for love.”

She later added, “We had wounds that needed healing and we had to wax separately.”

Schaech was previously married to Christina Applegate and admits he wasn’t far enough from their breakup at the time he met Kramer. He still had feelings for Applegate, which in turn affected his relationship with Kramer. He even said he would sometimes “accidentally” call Kramer Christina.
“After my first marriage, I just never got healed,” he says. “I finally realized how broken my heart was.”
Later in the episode, Kramer recalls a time when Schaech was there for her during one of her darkest times. Although she had previously reached out to him to apologize, Schaech was not receptive at the time. Years later he was.
Recalling an impromptu email she received from him, she recited, “I heard you have Dancing with the Stars. I’m really sorry that your husband (Mike Caussin) is cheating on you. I know you have a beautiful baby and if you need anything I’m here.”
“I just remember being so grateful in that moment,” says Kramer. “Her [Schaech and wife Julie Solomon] become family.”

Schaech and Kramer split just a month after their marriage in 2010. The actor opened up about the country singer’s failed marriage in a Reddit AMA in December 2020.
Meanwhile, the Legends of Tomorrow actor shared a photo from his wedding to Kramer on Twitter in April last year – and revealed he recently had to “explain” the shot to his 8-year-old son Camden Quinn.
“I told him I’ve been married three times. But I got it right when I married his mother,” Schaech wrote alongside the photo. “@kramergirl and I lasted a week. We were just meant for this photo and our friendship.”
Shortly after, Kramer discussed the move on her podcast with Caussin, who she was dating at the time before finalizing their divorce in July.

“So my ex-husband – because I guess he was technically a husband – so he tweeted a picture from our wedding day and said, ‘I had to explain this photo to my son to tell him that I’ve been married three times and that his mother was the one I should have ended up with,'” Kramer explained.
Though Kramer noted that she’s “friends” with the actor and very close to his wife Solomon, she said the post “rubbed me the wrong way” — mostly for tagging her in it.
“Why are you posting a photo of our wedding day? This is from the past. I didn’t want to see this photo on Twitter. Now you tag me in it,” she said at the time. “It bothered me.”
Returning to the topic in the new podcast episode, she and Schaech joked that they can now unblock each other on Instagram.
“I can go to their house and it won’t be an awkward situation. I respect him, I love his family,” says Kramer. “I love his heart and what he does and I’m glad the air I’m feeling is cleared.”
Schaech shares Camden with Solomon and in July 2020 they welcomed their daughter Lillian Josephine. Meanwhile, Kramer shares daughter Jolie Rae, 6, and son Jace Joseph, 3, with Caussin.
