A 20yearold patient was admitted to an intensive care unit in Switzerland after suffering a rare lung injury while masturbating. The very rare case was addressed in an article released in the journal Radiology Case Reports.
According to the report, the boy whose name has not been released and who suffered from mild asthma reported a “sudden onset of sharp chest pains followed by shortness of breath while lying in bed masturbating”. Then we went to the cantonal hospital in Winterthur.
When he arrived at the hospital, the patient had a swollen face and cracking and rattling noises could be heard from his lower jaw, down his neck and chest to his elbows. Cracking sounds could be heard as he breathed. Doctors who administered the treatment diagnosed the boy with deep pneumomediastinum, a problem where air enters the space between the lungs in the chest. Air could circulate through the body and be trapped by doctors. They felt air bubbles under the skin on the young man’s chest, arms and neck. In this particular case, the trapped air has spread around his body and even up to his skull. In more extreme cases, occurrence can lead to a collapsed lung.

“Spontaneous pneumomediastinum is a rare condition and typically affects young males in their 20s,” the authors write in the published article. “It can result from a variety of triggers, such as an acute worsening of asthma, strenuous exercise, excessive vomiting or a violent cough.”
According to the authors, there are few reports of pneumomediastinum attributed to sexual activity. “We found no cases related to autoeroticism, making our case unusual,” they wrote. It is possible that the Swiss case is something unique in the world.
The patient received paracetamol to treat chest pain and remained in the intensive care unit overnight before being transferred to the general ward the next day. He stayed there for three days before being discharged healthy and with quite a story to tell.
