PEOPLE – Cristiano Ronaldo, who was expecting twins with his girlfriend, posted a message on Twitter on Monday, April 18, to announce the death of one of the two newborns.

“It is with the deepest sadness that we must announce that our little boy has passed away,” the Manchester United Portuguese forward said in a message co-signed with his girlfriend, Argentinian-born Spanish model Georgina Rodriguez.

“Only the birth of our little girl gives us the strength to live this moment with a little bit of hope and happiness,” added the couple, who announced late last year that they are expecting twins.

“We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for their care and support,” the couple continued in their message. “We are devastated by this loss and ask that our privacy be respected at this difficult time. baby you are our angel we will always love you Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez.

The five-time Ballon d’Or, 37, was already a father to four children, including three through surrogacy, before he met Georgina Rodriguez.
