The Russian armed forces this Wednesday successfully tested the ICBM “Sarmat”, which is described as a key piece of Moscow’s arsenal and capable of hitting targets across Europe and even reaching the territory of the United States.
The Ministry of Defense said the Sarmat was launched at 3:12 p.m. (local time) from a cosmodrome in the Archangel region of northwestern Russia. The projectile, according to the official version collected by the Interfax news agency, successfully completed all its stages.
As soon as the testing phase is completed, the “Sarmat” will become part of the Strategic Missile Forces, and indeed the first regiment responsible for its potential deployment will be trained already in Krasnoyarsk. Its range is estimated at 17,000 to 18,000 kilometers.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is confident that this new missile will give those who try to “threaten” Russia pause for thought and has warned that the “Sarmat” can bypass all current defense systems. In this sense, he has ensured that there will be no similar technology for a long time.
This increase in weapons is tied to Russia’s claim on its arsenal amid a military offensive in Ukraine. Putin even put nuclear forces on alert in the days after the invasion, though his government has claimed for now that it will never cross that red line.
