The UN estimates that 12 million people in Ukraine and 4 million people traveling to neighboring countries will need humanitarian assistance in the coming months.
Speaking on Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that his country would view any third-party declaration of a no-fly zone over Ukraine as engaging in a war there, accused Ukraine of sabotaging a two-city ceasefire to evacuate civilians, and even claimed that Ukraine’s leadership calls into question the future of the country’s statehood.

According to The New York Times, Putin also said that Western sanctions imposed on his country are “akin to a declaration of war.”

In Mariupol, a strategic port in the southeast, Mayor Vadim Boychenko said thousands of people had gathered to safely exit the city when shelling began.

A 40-mile Russian convoy is stranded about 20 miles from the city, and residents are preparing to strike.

Many of those leaving the city – at the Kiev train station – are women and children, as Ukrainian men have been ordered to stay and fight.
In the cities of Bucha and Irpin, crowds of people moved under destroyed bridges, and Ukrainian soldiers crossed with children when crossing the Irpin River.

During a phone call on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a “desperate plea” to US senators, asking Eastern European countries to provide Russian-made aircraft to help his country.
