County surpasses 30,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations since pandemic began | news

More than 30,000 San Diego residents have been hospitalized locally with COVID-19 since the pandemic began, the County Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday. The first resident of the county was hospitalized in the area on February 25, 2020.

The county reported this milestone in addition to 405 new cases of COVID-19.

While hospital admissions have slowed since the Omicron variant peaked earlier this year, new COVID-19 infections hit a two-week high today. Though the number is still well below daily case counts of over 10,000 as of January this year, county health officials are urging vulnerable populations to exercise increased caution in public.

“The unfortunate hospitalization milestone and the surge in cases in the region and across the country are a reminder that the COVID-19 pandemic is not over,” said Wilma J. Wooten, MD, MPH, the county’s public health officer. “San Diegans, especially those at higher risk of serious consequences from infection, should continue to use non-pharmaceutical measures such as masking and distancing from sick people. Everyone should get vaccinated and kept up to date when eligible to protect themselves and those around them.”

Vaccination progress:

  • Received At Least One Vaccine: Nearly 2.97 million, or 94.3%, of San Diegoers ages 5 and older are at least partially vaccinated.
  • Fully vaccinated: Almost 2.61 million or 82.8%.
  • Booster shots administered: 1,237,325 or 55.9% of 2,213,453 eligible San Diego residents.
