A rocket from Gaza crashed in southern Sderot on Wednesday evening, followed by another launch of at least four rockets. Israelis respond with an airstrike

In the last few hours, Israel and the Palestinians have staged the largest armed escalation since the 11day clashes in May 2021. A rocket from Gaza slammed into a garden in the southern Israeli city of Sderot on Wednesday evening without causing damage. The army responded after midnight with a carpet attack in central Gaza, followed by another launch of at least four rockets by Hamas militants. The Israeli military then stated that the jets had attacked a military post and a tunnel complex containing raw chemicals used to make rocket engines. The armed clashes come after nearly a month of deadly violence in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, centered on the AlAqsa Mosque complex in Jerusalem, known to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Hours earlier, Israeli police had barred crowds of ultranationalist Jewish protesters from approaching East Jerusalem’s Muslim Old City in a bid to stave off an escalation after four weeks of violence that resulted in the deaths of at least 36 people. A similar ultranationalist march was being planned in the Old City last year when Hamas fired a barrage of rockets at Israel, sparking the 11day war. Palestinians and Arab Israelis carried out four deadly attacks in Israel between late March and early April, killing 14 people, mostly civilians. 23 Palestinians have been killed since March 22, including attackers who targeted the Israelis. On Tuesday, Israel conducted its first airstrike on the Gaza Strip in months in response to the first rocket fired from the Palestinian enclave since January.
