Holocaust Survivors Died in Mariupol

According to the Jewish community, a 91-year-old Holocaust survivor died in the port of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine. “At the age of ten, Wanda Semjonowa Objedkowa survived the Germans by hiding in a basement in Mariupol. 81 years later, she died in a basement in the same city while hiding from the Russians as a result of the terrible war,” the Auschwitz Museum said on its Twitter channel on Tuesday.

Objedkova died on April 4. Her daughter Larissa said she and her husband had to bury the 91-year-old man in a city park while the city was being bombed. The couple then managed to flee Mariupol. Much of the city’s news reaches the public late because there is no internet and those who have been rescued can only communicate with the outside world again in a safe place.

Objedkowa was born in Mariupol on 8 December 1930 and was ten years old when, after the Wehrmacht entered Mariupol, the SS rounded up the Jewish population there to kill them on the outskirts of the city. It is estimated that between 9,000 and 16,000 Jews were killed, including Objedkowa’s mother.

She survived the Nazi attack by hiding in a basement. When she was later discovered, family friends were able to convince the SS that the girl was of Greek descent. The child was thus saved from being shot.
