‘They made us proud’: President Biden offers USMNT condolences after their World Cup run ends in last 16 as loss to Holland knocks Americans out in Qatar
President Biden has told the US soccer team they “made us proud” after a 3-1 loss to Holland eliminated them at the World Cup in Qatar.
Speaking to Twitter shortly after the game’s final whistle, Biden said, “Guys you did us proud. We get up and keep going. To a bright future and back here at home in 2026.”
The USA fell back to Holland after just 10 minutes through a goal by Memphis Depay and Daley Blind doubled the lead just before half-time.
Haji Wright retrieved one for USA but hopes of a comeback lasted just five minutes before Denzel Dumfries made it safe for Holland.

President Biden tweeted about his pride in the team’s performance at the World Cup
Biden was an enthusiastic supporter of the US team. Earlier on Saturday, he appeared in a video showing captain Tyler Adams jokingly passing the ball 7,000 miles from Qatar to the White House.
Biden wears his USA scarf, catches the pass and says, ‘It’s called football. Los USA! You guys will do it!’.
Biden tweeted the video with the caption, “Good kick Tyler Adams. Let’s go, USMNT!’.
He also sent a message to the US team before the tournament in Qatar started.

Speaking to coach Gregg Berhalter and his team on the phone, he said: “You guys, I know you guys are the underdog.
“But I’m telling you what a man, you have some of the best players in the world on your team and you represent this country and I know you’re going to play your heart out. So let’s shock them all.
“Keep having faith that you’re playing as hard as you can, knowing that you and your families, your team-mates and the whole country are rooting for you.”
