Moscow proposes UN veto power as Kiev guarantee

According to Moscow, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council could become guarantors of Ukraine’s security in the future. A representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexey Polishchuk, told the state news agency TASS on Thursday. This issue will be discussed in negotiations between Kiev and Moscow, Polishchuk said.

In addition to Ukraine’s status as a neutral, non-aligned and nuclear-free country, the negotiations also included the question of which countries should give Ukraine security guarantees in return.

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council are Russia, China, Great Britain, the United States and France. But other options are not excluded, said Polishchuk. In exchange for agreeing to the country’s neutral status, Kiev demanded, among other things, solid security guarantees from other countries.

Russia recently announced that it had already sent proposals to end the war to Kiev last Friday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denied this on Wednesday after a meeting with EU Council President Charles Michel in Kiev. “I didn’t hear anything, I didn’t see anything. I’m convinced they didn’t give us anything,” he said.

Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu still sees the possibility of a high-level meeting between Zelensky and Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will speak with Zelenskyy and Putin “in the coming days”, Cavusoglu said in an interview with CNN Türk, according to Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform. The minister recounted his own conversations with the two chancellors and emphasized. “Basically, they both express themselves positively when it comes to a meeting, as long as the conditions are right.”
